How To Temperature Map Refrigerated Vehicles

In order to ensure excellent customer service, we make sure our vehicles are temperature mapped accordingly to provide as accurate delivery as possible. In this blog post we’ll describe the work that goes into our vehicles to keep them at the right temperature.

What Is Temperature Mapping?

Temperature mapping lets us see what the temperature distribution is like within the refrigerated vehicles. It helps us to see whether or not we have an even spread of temperature throughout the vehicle, or whether there are cold spots (or warmer spots). It shows us we are transporting goods at exactly the right temperature for our clients’ requirements.

Why Is Temperature Mapping Important?

There are a number of reasons why temperature mapping is important. Firstly, it means we can work exactly to our clients’ requirements, ensuring that, no matter what kind of chilled goods and products need to be delivered, they can be kept at the right temperatures whilst onboard our specially designed refrigerated vans.

Secondly, temperature mapping means we can be a lot more efficient. We can transport goods that have the same temperature requirements together, cutting journey times and the number of journeys we need to make. This is better for the environment, better for our couriers, and better for our clients who can have their chilled goods delivered much more efficiently.

How Is It Done

The first thing that’s carried out with temperature mapping is looking at the vehicle’s highest storage point. That’s not the same as the highest shelf or piece of racking; the boxes and cartons placed on these shelves will be higher than the shelf itself.

Next – potential problem areas should be noted. In a refrigerated vehicle these would be areas that are close to the engine, or to the rear doors. It is unlikely there will be windows in a refrigerated vehicle’s storage area, but if there are, these are potential issue spots too.

A calibrated temperature probe should be used to take measurements at these points, as well as other areas around the van. You will then be able to see if there are any areas that are not cooled to the right temperature. Once you have mapped the van and made sure any areas that might cause difficulties have been assessed, you should record the data. Now that you have all the information, you can provide evidence to your client their goods are safe and the van is going to be at the correct temperature, and you have risk assessed any hazard areas too.
