How to Package a Parcel, Ready for Delivery

When it comes to shipping a parcel, you know that you are in safe hands with Absolutely Courier. We will always take good care of your item and aim to collect and deliver using our eco-friendly Cargo Bikes or Electric Vans, wherever possible.

However, especially in the post-COVID-19 world, there are a few important Do’s and Don’ts to keep in mind when it comes to packaging a parcel, or preparing an item, for safe shipping.

Here is Abolutely’s guide on ‘How to Package a Parcel, Ready for Delivery

Packaging Do’s:

  • DO use a brand-new box because you want the best quality available. If possible, make sure that your box is double-walled, so that your products are well-protected whilst in transit. We also recommend triple-walled boxes for heavier items up to 30kg and for items such as laptops or fragile items.
  • DO request envelopes, or Jiffy bags, when shipping small individual items from our Customer Service Team 020 7685 1400, to keep them safe
  • DO use lots of packaging and padding to secure your item inside the box, as you’ll want some protection whilst it is in transit. Fill any voids in the box to avoid items moving around. Reuse old paper, cardboard packaging, and recyclable materials wherever possible, and only use bubble wrap, foam peanuts, or polystyrene where unavoidable due to environmental issues. An extra layer of packaging provides more protection against any damage, so we recommend a minimum of 5cm around your item.
  • DO weigh and measure the parcel after it’s fully packaged. If the parcel is bigger, or heavier than you were quoted for in your booking, it may take longer to deliver or be more expensive. For International movements, it is essential to provide specific weight and dimensions and we are always happy to offer advice, via our friendly International Team, on 01753 764060.
  • DO attach at least one label to the outside of your parcel. For extra security, an additional copy can be printed and fixed inside. If no label is available, please clearly write the collection and delivery address on your parcel using a permanent marker as well as your booking reference number and any other details.
  • DO speak to us if you wish to send liquids, perfume or PPE as some products are classed as Dangerous Goods. We can also advise on the best way to pack wines, perishable foods, and many other items for safe transit.
  • DO use strong parcel tape for sealing both the joins and the edges of your package. This will help keep the packaging intact whilst the parcel is in transit.
  • DO attach your 3 copies of your Customs Invoices in the see-through envelope on the outside of the parcel for international shipping as it will reduce the need to open your parcel for Customs Clearance.
  • DO look at the packaged parcel and note any distinguishing details. Sometimes it is a good idea to take a photo of the parcel in case you need to identify it at a later date.
  • DO remove any other labels, or old addresses, from the box, to avoid any confusion through transit.
  • DO contact us if you are unsure about anything as different countries have different regulations on shipping certain products, for example, books and printed matter.

Packaging Don’ts:

  • DON’T forget to apply ‘fragile’ or ‘handle with care’ labels, where required, as more information will help keep the product safe and secure. Always ensure the labeling so that it is clear how best to treat the goods being shipped.
  • DON’T attach or strap, multiple parcels together, as they each need their own separate booking reference and instructions. Check out London courier services for details on how to send multiple packages.
  • DON’T compromise on sealing your package(s). Keep your contents secure inside the parcel by using strong parcel tape.
  • DON’T make it obvious what is inside the parcel by writing the description or value of the goods. Use the correct booking reference fields instead. This way you reduce the risk of the goods falling into the wrong hands.
  • DON’T compromise on the packaging. Choose new, double-walled boxes for extra security. Always ensure the carton(s) can handle the weight of the products if not the packaging could split and some items may be lost or damaged.
  • DON’T choose packaging that cannot handle the weight of your item, use boxes that are specifically fit for your purpose.
  • DON’T forget to contact us if you have an unusually shaped item to ship and/or need specific advice on packaging/labeling to ensure that your shipment safely gets to its destination. We offer professional packing services for delicate items including glass, computers, etc., so please contact us at specialsteam@absolutelycourier.com for more information.

If you follow these simple guidelines, then your package will have every chance of being safely delivered across London and beyond, on time and intact.

In summary, use the correct packaging, that is the right shape and size for your parcel, and consider the strength and cushioning that will be needed to keep it safe and secure. If you need ‘Fragile’ or ‘Handle with Care’ labels, please contact us. Use recyclable materials to wrap your items for additional padding, then seal your box with strong parcel tape to ensure nothing comes out. Don’t use any strings, or cords, that could make your parcel difficult to handle, stick to simple boxes with tape and clear labels on the outside. If you are shipping abroad, then include your invoices on the outside in a clear pouch.

Once you have completed the checklist of Do’s and Don’ts from Absolutely’s ‘How to Package a Parcel, Ready for Delivery‘ guide, then your item will be ready to go.
